This is what separates an app from a website. Apple ships a major iOS version every September, Android one a year, and each breaks something — a permission that changes shape, a UI component that shifts, a library that is no longer signed. Google also regularly enforces a minimum API level to keep publishing. So you do not choose when to intervene: the calendar is imposed on you, and the only question is whether you are ready when it arrives.
Rarely the core of the app. What gives way are the edges: a third-party library abandoned by its author, an expired certificate, a revoked API key, a service that moved address, a new store rule. These failures share one trait — they happen without anyone touching the code, and they are discovered through store reviews if nobody is watching. A crash reporting tool costs almost nothing and sends the error with the device and version, before the one-star review.
It covers fixes, compatibility updates, republishing, crash monitoring and replies to reviews. It does not cover new features — those are quoted separately, and I would rather say so up front than pass a new feature off as a fix. You can also take nothing: the app keeps working, then degrades, then one day stops launching. That is your call, but make it knowingly.
